Word Search Tips & Tricks

Whether it's your first themed word search or your hundredth, these tips will help you find the hidden words faster.

Start smart

  1. Read the clue twice and brainstorm five words before touching the board.
  2. Scan the edges for the spangram's start and end letters.
  3. Look for rare letters (Q, Z, X, J, K) – they narrow down which words fit.
  4. Spot common pairs like TH, CH, SH, ING and ER.

When you're stuck

  1. Find any real word – even off-theme bonus words reveal letter patterns.
  2. Work on the smallest leftover pocket of letters: fewer letters, fewer options.
  3. Count the letters left in a pocket – it tells you how long the remaining words are.
  4. Say the theme out loud in different ways (singular, plural, a phrase).

Level up

  1. Expect bends: words often turn corners.
  2. Wordplay themes hide puns – think of idioms and double meanings.
  3. Take a break; fresh eyes spot words instantly.
  4. Use a hint early rather than giving up – it shows where a word starts.
